Clean Car Programme.

In June 2021, the Government announced new measures to help meet New Zealand’s 2050 carbon neutral target.

Clean Car Rebate

Clean Car Rebate

Buyers of Electric Vehicles (EV) or Plug-in-Hybrid (PHEV) vehicles between July 2021 – 31 March 2022 have been eligible for a fixed rebate, provided the vehicle purchase price was less than $80,000 including GST and on-road costs, and it had a 3-star safety rating or above.

The Clean Car Rebate can be applied for by the customer, after delivery of the vehicle.  The amount was calculated at the time of the vehicles first registration in New Zealand and is confirmed upon application.

Clean Car Variable Rebate and Fee

From 1 April 2022, the Clean Car Discount moves from a fixed rebate to a rating scale of CO2 emissions to calculate both rebates and fees for new and used eligible light vehicles when they are first registered in New Zealand.

Those with zero or low emissions will qualify for a rebate and those with high emissions will incur a fee.

Measuring CO2 emissions

Measuring CO2 emissions

In New Zealand, vehicles CO2 emissions are reported using different global cycles/test procedures depending upon their country of origin. Actual CO2 emissions and fuel economy depends on several factors including driving style, vehicle load, age, maintenance history and tyre pressure.

To ensure a comparable emissions rating between vehicles, NZTA have specified that all CO2 emission values used for CCD ratings should use the Three-Phase Worldwide Harmonised Light-Vehicle Test Procedure (3P-WLTP). WLTP is being introduced globally as a single emissions standard that reflects realistic road use conditions like variable speed ranges, acceleration and deceleration.

Mercedes-Benz New Zealand certifies their vehicles with both NEDC and 4P-WLTP values, therefore these are required to be converted into the 3P-WLTP test cycle before being assessed.

Please see your preferred Mercedes-Benz retailer to obtain the converted 3P-WLTP CO2 consumption figures to use for the NZ Clean Car Discount fee or rebate.
