Young Adventuress.

An adventure worth celebrating.

Liz Carlson has taken some very extraordinary journeys - and documented them all. In 2010, the award-winning photographer and writer started a blog called The Young Adventuress, which now has a quarter of a million visitors each month.

Over seven amazing years, Liz has covered her exciting travels to over 50 incredible countries on her must-read blog and Instagram. Her writing and photos have featured on BBC Travel, The New York Times, Buzzfeed and Forbes.

Liz is now based in New Zealand, and to help her celebrate her 30th birthday in the style she deserves, we gave her the keys to an X-Class so she and her best mates could take it on a tour of her “happy place” - Lake Heron Station in the South Island.

Carlson grew up driving four-wheel drives in the United States, and “doing donuts in Walmart parking lots” as a teenager.

“Perhaps it was the fear of becoming a boring old lady at 30, but something hit me on this trip, and while I knew I was given a precious charge of a brand new Mercedes-Benz to look after, it didn’t stop us from having fun and driving it straight into mud pits within a few hours of arriving at Lake Heron.”

As they drove through the Canterbury region’s picturesque terrain to the family-owned sheep station that covers 200 square kilometers of stunning wilderness, the crew were kept safe and secure by seven airbags and Active Brake Assist.

Some of her old skills came out to play once they hit the dirt, where Carlson could take advantage of the 2.3-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo-diesel engine and test the limits of the high and low range 4WD system.

Liz’s birthday adventure shows that the X-Class isn’t just the perfect work partner. The cabin comfort you expect to find in a Mercedes-Benz make it the perfect choice when it comes to weekends off the beaten track. Here’s to many more adventures, Liz!
