Though you may not know it, there’s no doubt Apparelmaster impacts your life in some way. They may provide the tea towels for your favourite restaurant, the overalls for your mechanic, or the sheets you sleep on in a hotel. No matter how they've impacted your world, Apparelmaster’s workplace rental and laundry services massively contribute to kiwi businesses.

We chatted to Brett Homan, the Managing Director of Auckland’s Apparelmaster branch, Pyrors, on the past, present and future of his business.

Not only has Apparelmaster been operating for nearly a half-century, but in that time, it has built an impressive network of relationships. Some of their key clients include major hospitality organisations, construction giants and even our very own Mercedes-Benz Retailer Network, providing our technicians with high-quality protective workwear.

Still being primarily family-owned is something that sets Apparelmaster apart, Brett says. “We know the industry well, with most sites (like ours) being third-generation family businesses - a lot of knowledge has been passed down.” Clearly, Apparelmaster recognises that part of the secret to longevity is a commitment to customers, and strong family roots.

Pyrors Apparelmaster is the kind of business that needs reliable vehicles to keep them moving forward. They switched to Mercedes-Benz Sprinters 13 years ago, and have been using them ever since. The reliable automatic transmissions offered in the second-generation Sprinters originally convinced the Pyrors branch to make the switch.

Pyrors Apparelmaster’s 13 Sprinters are tough vehicles. Their drivers load their vehicles at the plant every day, then take them home and leave early in the morning to deliver directly to customers. The van's role in keeping the business working efficiently is pivotal. “We love that they are automatic, especially in the Auckland traffic!” Brett laughs. “We like the technology, how safe they are, and of course the fuel efficiency. They are also so easy to drive.”

If these past two years have taught businesses anything, it’s to expect change, and that’s something Pyrors Apparelmaster has learnt to welcome. One of these major changes has been compliance in the food industry, Brett explains. “A lot of the larger food companies would often have their own OPL (On-Premises Laundry). However, with the increase in hygiene and infectious control compliance, their laundry needs are now managed by professional laundries like Apparelmaster.” Clearly, Pyrors Apparelmaster's ‘get stuck in’ attitude even extends to helping other businesses in times of need.

Like Mercedes-Benz, Apparelmaster is looking to the future. Pryors and other Apparelmaster sites invest in the latest wash technology. All sites work with INSTEP, a company that measures and benchmarks their carbon footprints. Pyrors are also starting work with FORSI Innovations, designing a filtration system that enables the business to reuse 85-90% of its wastewater.

Pyrors’ environment-conscious innovations extend to its Sprinters, with the implementation of a van wash station that captures water from the building’s roof. There's no denying that Apparelmaster puts a strong focus on striving for a brighter tomorrow. Brett’s advice for new businesses wanting to be more environmentally friendly? “Speak to other business owners and get ideas from other industries who are running a sustainable business already.”

Apparelmaster's evolution in the New Zealand market is evident, but this is just the start for the kiwi business. For a lot of its sites around the country, expansion is on the cards, and Apparelmaster continues as a group to grow in all areas of business. Brett’s passion for the businesses and for growth is contagious, and we are proud to have our Sprinters right there supporting them.
