When the New Zealand government launched an initiative to build a network of bicycle and walking trails along the length of New Zealand in 2012, Steve Norton sensed an opportunity. This would be a chance to not just to share his love of cycling through the spectacular countryside around Queenstown, but also to leave behind his 9-5 corporate job and pursue his passion of working in the outdoors full-time.

Together with partner and co-owner Lisa Cooper, Steve founded Around The Basin, a business dedicated to taking cycling tours along the Queenstown Trail riding paths. From humble beginnings with just the two partners and a single van and trailer, the business now has multiple employees, a fleet of vehicles, and takes tens of thousands of clients on unforgettable tours every year.

“When we first established the business, both my partner Steve and I worked on every aspect of the business” says Lisa. “As the business has grown we have taken on a new business partner, Hamish Fleming, and been able to delegate more roles. The key to our success is that everyone is prepared to help out where needed so our customers receive the best experience possible and our team shares a sense of camaraderie in their work.”

It's easy to build a collaborative culture when your work takes you into one of New Zealand's most captivating regions. The breath-taking environment of the Queenstown Trail features diverse terrain that transverses lush forests, serene lakeshores, rolling farmland, suspension bridges and even historic gold mining sites.

Lisa, Steve and Hamish proudly contribute to both the culture and environment of the Queenstown region through a range of community initiatives. Around The Basin supports local fundraisers, Pink Ribbon events and sponsors local athletes. They’ve even sponsored a beehive as part of the Bee The Change initiative, which aims to restore bee populations to the Whakatipu Basin to aid in the pollination of native plant species.

Around The Basin offers a selection of self-guided rides, ranging from easy-going Bike The Wineries itineraries through to adventurous journeys along the mighty Kawarau River and shores of Lake Wakatipu toward Queenstown. There’s a tour to suit every rider and every ability level, and with the option of riding an e-bike it’s accessible to anyone.

“The Queenstown Trail is quite hilly and e-bikes are a great choice as they simply flatten out the hills,” Steve says. “We see so many customers with huge smiles on their faces and great excitement about the achievement of actually getting out and exploring on a bike again!”

When it comes to ferrying all those riders and bikes around, the team at Around The Basin depends most on their workhorses – a pair of 11-seat Mercedes-Benz Sprinters. “They’re very comfortable and suit the luxury end of our business,” Lisa says. “We love their quietness, and being automatic they’re nice and easy to drive. Plus the leather seats are easy to keep clean, especially on those muddy days!”

As for the future, Around The Basin plans to grow its offerings into the newly opened new Wharehuanui Trail and the Kawarau River Trail to Cromwell. As Lisa puts it, “We’re looking forward to showing off more of our amazing landscape to all our visitors and working with such a great team of people!”
