For some visitors, the perfect Aotearoa holiday means five-star hotels, multicourse meals at fancy restaurants and nights sleeping on 1,000 thread-count sheets – and we’re happy to oblige.

For many others though, their dream looks like Barbara.

Touring through New Zealand from the comforts of a well-equipped campervan is a time-honoured tradition. It gives visitors a chance to travel on their own terms, enjoy authentic experiences and explore everything our land has to offer from the convenience of their hotel-on-wheels. And that’s exactly what Amy and Nigel had in mind when they purchased a converted ex-ambulance Mercedes-Benz Sprinter named ‘Barbara’.

The couple knew what they were looking for when they set out to get a campervan, and needed something that was up for the task. “Mercedes-Benz has a long-standing reputation for producing high quality vehicles, known for their durability, reliability, and engineering excellence,” Nigel observes. “These vans are known for their powerful and efficient engines, which are crucial for carrying heavy loads and driving long distances, while being very fuel-efficient.”

Barbara’s bee-themed design stands out wherever it goes. All the drawers have bee-accented handles, a honeycomb shaped arch separates the bed to the living area, and vibrant yellow bedding and décor cushions ties it all together. “Barbara looked like a giant buzzy bee with the yellow paintjob, and as the buzzy bee is iconic in NZ it seemed fitting,” says Amy.

But Barbara’s appeal goes far beyond just aesthetics. The campervan features ample interior space and a 1.82m cabin height, and the bed can even be extended to ensure a comfortable sleep for tall people. The gas camping stove can be used inside or swung out for outdoor cooking. Two bench seats face each other, and a table pulls out for working or dining. Add in an awning and outdoor carpet, a full complement of kitchen equipment, books and games, and a perfect cubby for your furry friend, and Barbara has it all!

“Van conversions often seem to be full of trade-offs, but we think Barbara has very little compromise,” says Amy proudly.

The couple are happy to share their knowledge and experiences to help the guests who hire Barbara explore New Zealand. “We recommend people plan their routes in advance by researching the places they want to visit and creating an itinerary, but also leaving room for spontaneity,” Nigel says.

“It’s important to book campsites in advance, especially during peak season, and if you’re planning on ‘freedom camping’ outside designated campsites, be sure to follow local regulations. And be prepared for changeable weather!” adds Nigel. “But most of all, take your time and savour New Zealand’s natural beauty – you'll want to soak it all in.”
