There’s no greater excitement than spying an NZ Post van arriving with that special parcel that’s had you checking the mailbox every two minutes since hitting ‘Add to Cart.’ Now the experience can be even more satisfying, knowing these deliveries are increasingly low carbon.

That’s because the next delivery your local NZ Post courier makes might arrive in one of the new all-electric Mercedes-Benz eVito Panel Vans recently ordered by NZ Post. The company has ordered 60, and the time of order, it was the largest single order of electric Mercedes-Benz Vans by a commercial operator - outside of Europe. A deal made possible through an arrangement with New Zealand Green Investment Finance (NZGIF). Of these 60, 22 are part of its delivery fleet.

New Zealanders have relied on NZ Post’s services for over 170 years and in this time technology and consumer demands – like online shopping - have evolved. Consequently, NZ Post has continually sought to improve how it delivers mail.

With climate change an ever-growing concern, NZ Post’s move towards using electric vehicles within its fleet reflects its adaptability and ongoing mission to put New Zealanders at the forefront of its mission.

“Sustainability is embedded in our culture at NZ Post, and this is just another way we are showing we are committed to our people, our communities and delivering for our planet,” says Dawn Baggaley, NZ Post’s Group Sustainability Manager.

While delivering parcels is what NZ Post is known for, it’s also committed to delivering on its ambitious carbon reduction targets to reduce emissions by a third by 2023. Part of this will be achieved by transitioning its fleet of 2,000 delivery vans from diesel and petrol to electric vehicles.

“It’s a milestone to celebrate at a time when climate change is impacting our communities,” adds Baggaley. “It’s a matter of urgency that we do everything we can to reduce emissions, and we are also seeking to assist our delivery partners by shifting to low carbon delivery.”

NZ Post plans to transition a quarter of its last-mile delivery contractor fleet to electric by 2025, with the balance of the contractor fleet going electric by 2030.

Electric vehicles typically cost less to run, but the initial purchasing cost may be a barrier. With NZGIF, the company has structured an innovative deal that offers competitive financing and pricing benefits to its contract delivery partners via a tiered leasing model, helping them shift into an electric van sooner.

Gerrit du Toit has worked with NZ Post as a contracted driver since September 2021 and was the first in the fleet to accept the keys to a brand-new Mercedes-Benz eVito Panel Van. Gerrit and his wife, Elly, operate two courier runs across half of Taupo’s CBD and the residential areas of Nukuhau and Rangatira Park. As Gerrit covers so much ground on his courier runs, he’s become more interested in more sustainable, low-carbon options.

“I started looking at the long-term savings and the benefits for the environment,” he says.

Growing up in South Africa, Gerrit has happy memories of helping his dad, who passed away in 2020, on his courier runs in combustion engine Sprinter and Vito vans. Gerrit says his father would be proud of his EV purchase.

“I feel I’ve come full circle – these EV versions of the Sprinter and Vito vans my dad used to drive are the next level. Dad would be so stoked to see where we’re going in New Zealand with this new generation of EVs,” says Gerrit.

Diane Tarr, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia and New Zealand, is excited about NZ Post’s progression towards a more sustainable business model with help from Mercedes-Benz electric vans.

“This is a very exciting step towards a more sustainable future for Mercedes-Benz Vans and our important partner NZ Post. We are now ready with a strong customer-centric electric product portfolio and can’t wait to see the eVito come to life on the road through NZ Post and its delivery partners,” says Tarr.

NZ Post now has one of the largest EV delivery fleets in the country – including more than 400 electric Paxters - delivering mail, parcels and a lower carbon future for New Zealand.
