How do you define performance? For some drivers, it’s all about unadulterated power and speed. But for those who prefer to fly under radar, there’s a more nuanced definition: a car that’s highly capable, yet equally versatile and practical.

 

 

This is where the latest Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC finds its own glorious groove. It’s a more accessible version of the Mercedes-AMG C 63 – the car that has rightfully become a benchmark for performance and capability.

 

Future-focused technology

 

In its first-generation guise, the C 43 was equipped with a twin-turbo six-cylinder powerplant. The latest iteration of the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC presents an even more intriguing proposition. Its 300 kW and 500 Nm comes from just four cylinders, utilising turbocharging technology originally developed for Formula 1.

But that’s a conversation for another day. Right now, we have a C 43 idling gently in front of us, a few hours to kill, and a planned route encompassing suburban streets, smooth highway and coarse, winding country roads.

 

The look and feel of a luxury car

 

The new C 43 features everything that’s noteworthy about the current C-Class range, whilst adding a few sporty touches: larger wheels, AMG’s performance-style grille, a boot-lip spoiler and quad exhaust outlets. Its evolutionary exterior, which embodies the Mercedes-Benz design principle of ‘Sensual Purity’, brings thoroughly modern touches to the C-Class’s classic three-box shape. The overall impression is a distinctive car with a confident yet understated stance.

Inside, quality details and surfaces abound. More architecture has been inherited from the C-Class, including the large tablet-style display elegantly emblazoned mid-dash. Personally, I absolutely adore the armrest design – each a beautiful work of art appearing to float alongside its door.

 

Other highlights unique to this model include the flat-bottomed AMG Performance steering wheel with a thick, leather-wrapped rim; dual crossbars housing touch-and-swipe controls to look after just about everything you need on the fly; and rotary controllers affixed to the lower half of the steering wheel for quick and intuitive toggling between the different AMG modes and functions.

 

Plenty of personality

 

It's time to head off. The engine, exhaust, and AMG Ride Control suspension and adaptive dampers are all set to Comfort mode. The C 43 purrs through a suburban jaunt with all the compliance and docility of a non-AMG model, leaving the impression that it would be an exceptional choice for a daily commuter – especially when factoring in the inherent thriftiness of the four-cylinder engine.

 

As the road opens up, a quick toggle into Sport mode and the C 43 at once feels tauter and more aggressive. Gear shifts are snappier, and the steering is more direct and weightier. Flipping the gorgeously tactile alloy gear shift lever down a few cogs elicits an immediate response, and the C 43 attacks the open road with vigour.

Rather than unleashing a howling beast, the C 43 emits a throaty warble under full power – and upshifting the nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission under acceleration draws characterful booms and pops.

 

Even a series of off-camber switchbacks can’t fluster the C 43, which draws upon the dual competencies of rear-wheel steering and 4MATIC all-wheel-drive. With crisper turn-in available as the rear wheels track the front of the car, you can accurately point the C 43 at the corner apex then quickly pick up the throttle with the assurance of grip-and-go traction from all four corners.

 

The experience really gets to the heart of what this new C 43 is about. A wolf in sheep’s clothing, there’s enough performance to have a lot of fun, but never so much that it becomes overwhelming. With the latest C 43, you can choose your own adventure.
