The all new Mercedes-AMG G 63 is often admired for its rugged exterior design and comfortable, high-tech cabin. But one of the most innovative – and perhaps most useful – features of this vehicle is something not immediately apparent to the eye.

In contrast to conventional suspension set-ups, the optional AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension system actively manages vehicle dynamics through advanced hydraulic actuators and sophisticated electronic controls.

The ingenuity of this suspension system is that it isolates the vehicle’s response to bumps in the road to each individual corner. Hit a pothole on the highway with the left front corner, for instance, and the impact is subtly absorbed, minimising disturbance to the rest of the cabin. The result is less roll, and a smoother, more comfortable ride – whether you’re driving on-road or off the beaten track.

Less roll, more control

Previously implemented in high-performance models like the Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster and AMG GT 63, AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL draws on the brand’s extensive engineering expertise with world-leading performance vehicles – and has been further refined to be more responsive and adaptable in the all new AMG G 63.

Key features of AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL include active hydraulic roll stabilisation, which dramatically reduces body roll during cornering, and adjustable damping, which provides an instantaneous response to road conditions and driving style.

The suspension adjusts based on the selected drive mode, using active stabilisers to keep the car steady. The stabilisers on the front and rear axle can also be controlled separately to make the handling more dynamic.

Smoother on-road performance

The air suspension with variable damping smooths out even the roughest surfaces, while hydraulic actuators at each corner fine-tune the dampers – stiffening the outer ones and softening the inner – for sharper, more precise cornering.

When driving at speed, AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL lowers the vehicle automatically to improve safety and fuel efficiency. The three driving modes – Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ – offer noticeable differences in stiffness and handling thanks to the separate valves for compression and rebound in each damper.

Off-road driving

The AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL system comes to the fore when the Mercedes-AMG G 63 is taken off-road.

When rough or unpredictable surfaces are encountered, the active hydraulic stabilisers counter body roll and help keep all four wheels in contact with the ground. Not only does this improve traction and stability, it keeps the driver in full control, allowing them to approach uneven terrain and challenging off-road conditions with confidence.

The clever AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension system has managed to improve the iconic wagon’s performance, safety and stability both as a cruising vehicle on the highway and as an off-road rally vehicle.
