Saluting its iconic heritage, the G 580 retains the classic G-Class silhouette – characterised by its boxy shape and prominent stance – but adds contemporary elements. Notable features include an aerodynamically improved bonnet, rear wheel arches, A-pillar cladding and roof spoiler – all of which contribute to the vehicle's sleek profile – while the refined grille and updated LED headlights give it a modern edge.

Inside, the spacious cabin is beautifully appointed in premium upholstery, ambient lighting, advanced sound insulation, power front seats with memory function, heated and cooled cupholders, and wireless smartphone charging – setting the scene for a comfortable, sophisticated journey, however rugged the landscape is outside.

All of this is complemented by the latest generation MBUX infotainment system and OFFROAD COCKPIT, which provide drivers with all the necessary information about their journey at a glance. The G 580 is driven by a cutting-edge electric powertrain that seamlessly integrates with the vehicle's design, delivering instant torque and a smooth driving experience through four individually controlled electric motors, one at each wheel. 

Each motor features its own two-speed transmission, enabling a true low-range off-road mode. With a powerful output of 432kW and a maximum torque of 1,164Nm, the G 580 offers exceptional performance. Its 116kWh lithium-ion battery has an NEDC-tested range of 567km, and is cleverly integrated into the traditional ladder frame, ensuring a low centre of gravity for enhanced stability.

In the driver’s seat

Perhaps the first thing to notice when hopping into the G 580 is the high driving position, which gives the driver a commanding view of their surrounds. Next, is the instant acceleration off the mark. 

The in-cabin noise insulation is exceptional, effectively reducing external sounds and creating a serene driving experience. Of course, some drivers crave the sound of a roaring engine, which is where the G-ROAR feature comes into play – providing a subtle yet engaging noise that resonates within the cabin and adds to the overall excitement of driving this vehicle.

The driver can also choose between five driving modes (Individual, Sport or Comfort for general driving, and TRAIL or ROCK for off-roading), which tailor the vehicle's motors, transmission, suspension and steering performance as required. Switching between drive modes is a straightforward process, and each mode offers a distinct experience. The electric drive provides impressive tractive power and precise control. The G-Class features virtual differential locks that use torque vectoring instead of traditional mechanical locks, allowing for fully variable torque distribution across each wheel. This innovation enables the G 580 to maintain a steady, confident line both uphill and downhill, even in the toughest conditions. The virtual locks also ensure maximum traction and flexibility during cornering, making the G-Class agile and manoeuvrable across a variety of terrains.

But it’s the G 580’s off-road capabilities which truly shine. The power and manoeuvrability this car demonstrates off sealed roads is quite remarkable. Advanced features such as G-Steering deliver agility in tight spots and around hairpin bends; the wheels turn at different speeds and invoke slight oversteer depending on the situation, making for a significantly smaller turning circle. 

The three-speed crawl function acts like cruise control when off-roading – maintaining optimum propulsion and precise control while the driver focuses on navigating the terrain. Taking on 45° slopes and driving along 35° angles is where the G 580 comes into its own. Meanwhile, the remarkable G-Turn function enables the wheels on the left and right to spin in opposite directions, allowing the vehicle to perform a full 360° turn on the spot to navigate small, tight spaces.
