Since its initial debut in the 1970s, the G-Class has become a true automotive icon – and not just among brand enthusiasts. The G-Class represents the pinnacle of high-performance engineering from Mercedes-AMG, blending exceptional driving dynamics with legendary off-road capabilities.

This latest iteration of this vehicle builds on the legacy of its predecessors and presents a truly unique offering in the Mercedes-AMG line-up. As comfortable cruising down the highway as it is crawling over rocky terrain, the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 sets a new standard for what a performance SUV can be.

History and modernity

The new AMG G 63 is a masterful blend of G-Class DNA and contemporary Mercedes-AMG flair. It retains the iconic boxy silhouette, but with refined edges and features – including a new grille, LED headlights and taillights – befitting a vehicle of its calibre.

The newly designed front bumper is more prominent than ever, with larger air intakes that hint at the powerhouse lurking within. Beneath integrated wheel arches, 22-inch cross-spoke forged wheels in sleek black immediately draw the eye. These design elements ensure the new G-Class commands attention wherever it goes, while the AMG badge on the bonnet leaves no doubt about the high-performance potential of this adventure-ready vehicle.

When it’s time to slip into the driver’s seat, the handy KEYLESS-GO feature (which is available as part of the Standard Comfort Package) subtly elevates the experience, allowing you to enter and start the vehicle without fumbling for keys (so long as they are somewhere on your person).

Inside, the new AMG G 63 is a sanctuary of premium materials and cutting-edge technologies. It’s clear this vehicle has been designed with all the tools needed for a comfortable and fully engaged driving experience. Among a suite of other features, ample cargo space, temperature-controlled cupholders, a wireless charging pad and adjustable seats upholstered in the finest Nappa leather are some of the most appreciated assets during long journeys and off-road adventures.

At the heart of the cockpit is the MBUX multimedia system. This state-of-the-art interface brings a new level of intuitiveness to vehicle controls and navigation. The Augmented Reality feature overlays directional arrows onto a live camera feed of the road ahead, making navigation in unfamiliar places so much easier.

Power meets precision

Starting up the new AMG G 63 is an event in itself. Thanks to the AMG-built exhaust system, the 4L V8 twin-turbo engine announces itself with a deep, resonant growl that holds the promise of performance.

Ease onto the accelerator and the response is sharp and immediate, boosted by the integration of the 48V mild hybrid system with its Integrated Starter Generator (ISG); when revs are low, it provides an additional 15kW and 200Nm of torque on top of the engine's already impressive 430kW and 860Nm. This available power allows the new G-Class to cover the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.4 seconds.

On the road, the AMG G 63 exhibits an impressive duality. At cruising speeds, it's a remarkably composed and balanced ride – the AMG Active Ride Control suspension managing to even out the bumps in the road. Inside the well-insulated cabin, road and exhaust noise is minimal, while the steering – which is appropriately weighted for a vehicle of this size – offers welcome precision.

When it’s time to pick up speed, the new AMG G 63 remains perfectly composed, the sophisticated suspension system and aerodynamic design ensuring stability at high speeds.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission delivers lightning-quick shifts to suit practically any driving environment. In automatic mode, it's intuitive enough to predict your needs based on your driving style. Switch to manual using the paddle shifters, and you have direct control over the powertrain, adding another layer of engagement to the driving experience.

For a more customised driving experience, the DYNAMIC SELECT system tailors the vehicle to suit personal preferences and road conditions. In Comfort mode, for example, you get a comfort-oriented suspension and steering set-up, which makes the new G-Class pliable enough for relaxed city driving. Switch to Sport or Sport+ and the vehicle's demeanour changes; the throttle response sharpens, the suspension firms up, and the exhaust note becomes more pronounced. In these modes, you can fully appreciate the performance prowess of Mercedes-AMG.

When you’re feeling a little more daring, the RACE START function (available in Sport and Sport+ modes with the optional AMG Performance Package) drops the 0-100 km/h time to an astonishing 4.3 seconds. It's a feature that's more at home on a racetrack than an SUV, but it perfectly encapsulates the new AMG G 63's no-nonsense approach to performance.

Conquering tough terrain

While the new AMG G 63's on-road performance is impressive, it’s also arguably one of the best off-road cars available.

The foundation of its off-road capability lies in its robust construction. The ladder-frame chassis provides exceptional rigidity and protection, allowing you to tackle challenging terrain with confidence. The permanent all-wheel-drive system, coupled with the LOW RANGE off-road reduction gear, ensures that power is always available when it's needed most.

With its double wishbone front axle and rigid rear axle, the suspension setup maintains consistent contact with the ground, providing continuous high traction even in the most demanding situations. This is also where the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL system is most noticeable; the active hydraulic stabilisers compensate for body roll in fractions of a second. Not only does this improve on-road dynamics, it also ensures greater articulation and stability off-road.

One of the most innovative features of the new G-Class is the Transparent Bonnet function. Using cameras and clever software, it allows you to see what's directly ahead and under the front of the vehicle. It’s an invaluable tool when navigating obstacles or steep inclines, or any other situation where visibility may be limited.

The OFFROAD cockpit display provides crucial information at a glance, including tyre pressure, differential lock status and current tilt angle. Direct selection buttons for deactivating the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) or activating hill descent control are within easy reach, allowing you to quickly adapt the vehicle's systems to your driving needs.

Whether you're an experienced off-road enthusiast or a beginner, the new AMG G 63's systems work in harmony to guide you through challenging terrain and make every drive feel like an adventure.
