What do you do with a global best-selling SUV driven by more than 2.6 million customers worldwide? The answer, of course, is to make it even better.

That’s exactly what Mercedes-Benz has aimed to do with the hugely popular GLC, having redesigned and reengineered this mainstay of its family-friendly SUV range ahead of the new model’s anticipated launch here in Australia and New Zealand in the first half of 2023.

The athletic SUV offers a fascinating glimpse into the future of the brand’s combustion-engine plans, introducing a vehicle range that is exclusively powered by efficient hybrid drivetrains.

The recent launch of the GLC range in Europe included four-cylinder engine variants from the current FAME (Family of Modular Engines) all combined with an electric motor. Mild-hybrid units feature 48-volt technology and receive support in the low-rev range from an integrated second-generation starter-generator (ISG).

The ISG fitted to the 48-volt mild-hybrid units ensures the engine starting is almost imperceptible when in start-stop mode. It also enables functions such as “gliding”, boost or recuperation, which all contribute to significant fuel savings.

Off-road capability is enhanced across the GLC range with a variety of innovations available as standard, including updates to the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

An innovative “transparent bonnet” feature shows a virtual view under the front of the vehicle, including the front wheels and their steering position, via the central display when off-road mode is active.

Low-speed agility, high-speed stability

Whatever the road surface, drivers of the GLC will appreciate the dynamic capabilities of its four-link front and multi-link independent rear suspension. The standard suspension provides an elevated level of ride comfort and agile handling, but the optional Engineering package with AIRMATIC suspension, variably adjustable dampers, and rear-axle steering takes the ride and handling to the next level.

Already regarded as an athlete in the SUV category, optional rear-axle steering improves both low-speed agility and high-speed stability on the new GLC. At speeds less than 60 km/h, the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction to the front wheels, which reduces the vehicle turning circle and requires fewer turns of the steering wheel from lock to lock. Then, at higher speeds, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front wheels, for improved handling stability.

Design all in the family

Stylistically, the new GLC is immediately recognisable as a member of the extended Mercedes-Benz SUV family. The exterior design features a new-look front end, with headlights that integrate seamlessly with the new radiator grille, emphasising the vehicle’s width. Other changes include redesigned tail lights, cleaner body sides and a wider footprint – 6mm at the front and 23mm at the rear – which combine with flush-fit wheels to reinforce an athletic appearance.

Inside, the GLC continues the modern luxury theme with a design and layout that bears a striking resemblance to the Mercedes-Benz flagship, the S-Class saloon. The beautifully finished cabin packages the latest generation MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, including a 12.3-inch high-resolution LCD driver display screen and an 11.9-inch central display, giving the interior an even more digital and intelligent appearance.

Both the hardware and software underpinning the twin displays have made major advances, with brilliant images and an intuitive interface, while the ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant features enhanced dialogue and learning ability, to be even more adaptive to user preferences.

Whether listening to news updates or high-fidelity music from the optional 15-speaker, 710-watt Burmester® surround sound system, occupants will appreciate the vehicle’s superbly refined sound signature. Subtle changes to vehicle aerodynamics along with acoustic optimisation of the bodyshell, sophisticated sound insulation and an acoustic membrane in the windscreen, ensure the interior of the GLC has never been quieter.

More space, more safety innovations

Drivers and passengers also benefit from extra space inside the hushed cabin. The new GLC is 60mm longer than its predecessor, with a 15mm-extension to the wheelbase. The changes expand rear seat legroom but also boost luggage capacity by 70 litres to an impressive 620 litres, accessed via the standard EASY-PACK electric tailgate.

Safety is always a priority at Mercedes-Benz and it’s no different in the GLC where an already impressive armoury is enhanced with the latest generation of the Driving Assistance package. This includes Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, plus a new parking package with optional 360-degree camera.

Mercedes-Benz is yet to confirm the GLC model line-up and specification for Australia and New Zealand but it’s safe to say that a high level of standard equipment will offer the experience customers expect from the three-pointed star.

“With the new GLC, we are continuing a success story into the future,” says Britta Seeger, Mercedes-Benz Group AG board member responsible for Marketing and Sales. “As the best-selling Mercedes-Benz model in the last two years, it is one of the most important vehicles in our product portfolio. I am confident that the new GLC with its combination of dynamic driving enjoyment, modern design and functions such as the off-road cockpit and our MBUX Augmented Reality navigation, will thrill both adventurers and families.”
