After 18 months of COVID cancellations for major motor shows, Munich’s IAA Mobility 2021 represented one of the first opportunities for cars and people to mingle en masse at an international event.

Replacing the traditional, and traditionally enormous, Frankfurt Motor Show, IAA Mobility was held from 7 to 12 September in a scattering of locations around the German capital.

It was a diverse program of events designed to offer a tantalising peek at the latest in electro-mobility and pose the question: “What will move us next?”

Mercedes-Benz answered the call by unveiling five new fully electric models in an exciting sign of its progress towards becoming all-electric by the end of the decade. Here’s what dropped:

1.    The EQE

Due to arrive in New Zealand in the latter half of 2022, the EQE is the cutting-edge electrified version of the renowned E-Class sedan, offering a hugely impressive real-world battery range of around 600 km.

Christian Schmitt, a member of the user interface team responsible for the EQE’s new MBUX Hyperscreen, says the new EQE is a ‘smart car’ in every sense of the term.

“The MBUX will intelligently choose the most efficient route to your destination, considering the weather, terrain, distance and available charging stations along the way,” he says. “The EQE will learn from your habits, and become more personalised to your driving experience as time goes on.”

Built with the same all-new platform as the Mercedes-Maybach EQS concept, but with a shortened wheelbase, the EQE also offers a fun new ‘co-driver’ experience, allowing the front passenger to interact with the infotainment in a completely new manner.

2.    The Concept EQG

Fans of off-roading were also gifted a tantalising look at the near production-ready Concept EQG, an electrified version of the G-Class four-wheel-drive wagon.

“It was important for the whole engineering team to keep the character and DNA of the G-wagen incorporated into the next generation of off-road vehicles,” says Fabian Schossau, head of development for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

Schossau explains that aerodynamic improvements to the Concept EQG increases its range, and that the batteries have been positioned to keep the vehicle’s centre of gravity low, thus maximising its off-road capability.

Equipped with a four-motor powertrain to enable individual wheel speed control, the EQG features the first two-speed gearbox from Mercedes-Benz, with a ‘low range’ mode for enhanced off-road capability and maximum torque.

3.    The EQB

Built upon the same compact, seven-seat platform as the GLB SUV, the all-electric EQB will come with both front- and all-wheel-drive options, with the flagship EQB 350 4MATIC boasting 200kW of electrified power.

A 66.5kWh lithium-ion battery can deliver more than 400km of range, and can handle DC fast charging up to 100kW, which can recharge the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just over 30 minutes.

As with other Mercedes-EQ models, the EQB features a trademark closed-off black front grille with a daytime-running light strip lining the top of it, and looks as modern as it is alluring.

4.    The Mercedes-Maybach EQS

One of the boldest reveals of the 2021 IAA Mobility show was the Mercedes-Maybach EQS, a head-turning concept that introduces the brand new electric vehicle architecture for Mercedes-EQ.

“The EQS incorporates the standard EQ black front grille, but with pinstripe details, and there’s also a specialised Maybach ‘Double M’ emblem incorporated around the car,” explains Anja Steindl, a spokesperson for Mercedes-Maybach.

Other striking details include two-tone paint on the steel, aluminium, and carbon-fibre composite body, EQ helix lights at the rear, signature Maybach 24-inch alloy ‘dish wheels’, and an expected driving range of around 600km.

The modular interior is pure Maybach class; painstakingly crafted to emulate the experience of stepping onto a luxury yacht. The centre console even features a small vase for drivers to add their own touch of the great outdoors.

5.    The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+

Not one to be left behind, Mercedes-AMG also unveiled its first mass-produced electric vehicle, which also happens to be the brand’s fastest and most powerful model yet.

Jens Cierullies, Head of e-Drive development at AMG, says the 2022 EQS 53 4MATIC+ differs from the Mercedes-EQ flagship EQS 450+ in a number of ways.

“The EQS 53 has two electric motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear axle, and they are different in that they are larger, and the vehicle’s inverters allow more current to flow into the motors, delivering more power,” he explains.

The EQS 53 has a long list of exciting features, from 300kW regenerative braking for enhanced stopping power to upgraded rolling stabilisation for a better road feeling, as well as upgraded software and torque vectoring on all four wheels. However, the one that may garner the most enthusiasm from performance car lovers is the vehicle’s ability to simulate the famous AMG V8 rumble, thanks to vibrating seats and a specially designed sound experience.
